Liberta Bassas

Liberta Bassas was born in 1927, but neither her mental attitudes nor her cognitive agility are out of step with the times. She is a tireless woman in everything regarding her vocation, her literary production, and her spiritual mission. The daughter of a remarkable woman, Angela Edo, she embarked on a literary career not only because of the great love she held for her mother, but also because she had spent most of her life devoted to philosophy and teaching. Liberta Bassas' career in a well-known publishing house in her native Barcelona supplied her with enough money to get by, and also kept her immersed in encyclopedias and in their abundance of subjects. Ironically, this job precluded a full-time devotion to creative writing.
Yet she did produce some literary work, primarily contributions, both on her own and in conjunction with others, to newspapers and articles in her younger years. Later, she authored the Sopena Dictionary and published Brown Earth in 1957, The Last Son of the Sun in 1959, Sketches in 1959, and The Watered Wine and Other Stories in 1970. mtm has published her superb works on Jiwo Kami, the unforgettable character, The Garden of the Elements, Jiwo Kami I, in 1999, The Magus of the Blue Mountains, Jiwo Kami II, and Sweet Breeze, Jiwo Kami III, in the year 2000. The last title completes this excellent trilogy.
The greatest virtue of Liberta Bassas lies in her never-faltering commitment to her struggle. She has always known that she had a calling that she needed to heed. In addition, she never doubted that the time would come when she would be able to fulfill her calling. Her task was to compile and pass along the huge literary production of her mother. Nevertheless, our publishing house believes not only in the work of Angela Edo but also in the exquisite literary work of her daughter Liberta. Therefore, mtm editor.es takes pride in introducing the reader to this modest and, at the same time, exceptional woman and her writing. As she herself once put it, Liberta Bassas has been walking a single path since the day she was born, and she keeps on walking it today.
